Embark on an epic journey into the mystical world of Raven’s Watch, a captivating roguelike action game crafted by the creators of “A Curse of the Dead Gods”. An amalgamation of ancient lore, fallen heroes, and nightmarish enemies, this game can be played solo or online co-op. Let’s dive into the intricacies of this RPG and explore if it’s worth your time and money.

Gameplay and Characters

Raven’s Watch kicks off with just one unlocked character among the six available in the Early Access version. The game gradually rewards you with new characters as you progress, each offering a distinctive playstyle.

For instance, Little Red Riding Hood transforms into a powerful werewolf at night, with a completely new set of skills. As the human character, you have bombs, knives, dashes, and sprints at your disposal. But once the night falls and she transforms, you gain new abilities like leaps, stuns, and deadly claw attacks. All these make her one of the standout characters in the game.

Each character possesses two ultimate abilities, adding another layer of depth to the gameplay. The more you play, the more you unlock.

In-game Progression and Maps

The game follows a cycle of day and night, with each cycle lasting for four days. After this period, you’re teleported to the final boss fight, marking the end of chapter one. As the game expands with future updates, you can expect additional chapters and bosses.

Raven’s Watch features procedurally generated maps, which means every map you encounter will be distinct. The game map is scattered with special events that award you with power-ups and currency, which can then be used to upgrade your abilities at the starting point of the game.

These events range from simple tasks to challenging combat scenarios that span several minutes. You have four days (or around 15-20 minutes of gameplay) to navigate the map, power up, and prepare yourself for the ultimate boss fight.

Combat and Boss Fights

One of the game’s main highlights is its combat system. It’s not an auto-shooter, meaning you control every move and every shot, making the gameplay more immersive and challenging.

The boss fight, however, feels a bit lackluster. It involves attacking tentacles that appear intermittently, with the boss becoming vulnerable only after all tentacles are taken out. While the boss fight might not be the game’s strongest suit, the overall combat experience is enjoyable, thanks to the range of abilities and evolving character power levels.

Verdict: Is it Worth a Buy?

If you enjoy cooperative play, Raven’s Watch shines in the co-op mode. The current state of the game, although a bit bare-bones, provides a fun-filled and engaging experience when played with friends.

However, if you’re a solo player, it might be best to hold off for now. The game has enormous potential, but the limited content available in the Early Access version may not provide a fulfilling experience for single players. While the game’s fun factor cannot be denied, it seems prudent to wait for more content to be added.

Raven’s Watch is a game with great potential. Despite a few shortcomings and limited content, the unique characters, engaging combat, and potential for co-op play make it a promising addition to the roguelike genre. Watch this space for more updates as the game continues to develop.
